Joshua Holdeman
Josh Holdeman is Principal of The Hammond Group.
Josh began his career in 1993 at the Robert Miller Gallery, New York as an intern and rose to the position of Director in 1999. He was involved in all aspects of the gallery’s functions including exhibition programming, sales, administration and the management of artists and estates including The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Louise Bourgeois, The Estate of Diane Arbus, David Hockney, The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, Bruce Weber, the Estate of Joan Mitchell and the Pollack-Krasner Foundation.
In 2001, Josh joined Phillips, de Pury & Luxembourg as the Head of the newly formed Department of Photographs. Under his oversight, in less than 18 months, the Department gained majority market share for the sale of photographs at auction in New York, setting many world record prices and executing historic sales, including that of the Seagram Collection of Photographs.
In June of 2004, Josh joined Christie’s as Senior Vice President and the International Head of the Departments of Photographs and 20th Century Design. Under his direction, the two departments enjoyed unprecedented success, held significant market share over their competitors globally and handled important sales from collections such as those of Sir Elton John, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berge, The Richard Avedon Foundation and the Eggleston Artistic Trust. In 2009, Josh joined Christie's Post War and Contemporary Art Department as International Director and also became a member of the Chairman’s Office, where he worked with the firm's top clients globally and across categories until 2013.
In 2014, Josh joined Sotheby’s as Vice Chairman, Americas and Worldwide head of Photographs, 20th Century Design and Prints. Working across categories, with an international stable of clients, Josh oversaw the three departments who held sales in New York, London and Paris. Under his tenure, each department enjoyed unprecedented global success.
Josh is a graduate of Bates College and the Maryland Institute, College of Art and is a Certified Member of the Appraisers Association of America.
